The challenge: The federal Environmental Protection Agency estimates up to 50 percent of the waste set out by households in their municipal trash is actually compostable. When set to the landfill, organic waste emits methane gas during the decomposition process.
PLOTing a Solution: Food Well Alliance is working with metro Atlanta schools to start composting programs that reduce lunchroom food waste and instead turn organics into rich compostables for their school gardens. By incorporating STEAM and STEM curricula, participating students learn their role in building healthier communities by interacting with each phase of the composting cycle.
